The delivery of rare disease medications to private homes (trial phase)What we want to deliver

■ The private residence delivery initiative will be developed only in Japan.

Delivering rare disease medications safely and securely to patients who have difficulty making it to the hospital due to severe symptoms.

Challenges in handling

  • Some medications require to be controlled within a special temperature range (2°C to 8°C).
  • Some medications are sensitive to vibration.

Challenges for physicians who provide home visits

  • It is difficult for visiting physicians to bring medications with them.
  • Many medications are expensive and face “inventory risks” if they cannot be used.

Because of these challenges, the advancement of treatment at home in the area of rare diseases is considered to be difficult.

The MEDIPAL Group is engaged in private residence delivery as a specialist in pharmaceutical distribution, with the mission to “safely and securely deliver medications to patients who have difficulty visiting the hospital.”
With the aim for a society in which patients who have difficulty going to the hospital can receive home medical care with peace of mind, we are first conducting a trial to deliver medications for lysosomal storage diseases, a type of rare diseases, to patients' homes.

Current status of lysosomal storage disease treatment at home

Lysosomal storage diseases, which are rare diseases, have only a limited number of medical institutions with specialists, and patients are forced to spend long hours visiting to hospital.
Also, with many cases of difficulty going to the hospital due to gait disturbance or being bedridden, these diseases place a heavy burden on patients and their families. As a result, the treatment itself is often abandoned.

As of November 2023, for 8 out of the approximately 60 lysosomal storage diseases, 13 medications have been approved as “injectable medications that can be administered by insured physicians,” enabling the system to provide treatment at home.
However, difficulties in quality control and the transporting expensive medications for rare diseases have prevented many patients from receiving treatment at home.

Creation of value in distribution

By delivering medications to the patient's home under strict quality control on behalf of the visiting physician, the physician can provide home medical care without the burden of managing and stocking medications.
By improving the environment for the distribution of medications, we will create a society in which more patients who have difficulty going to the hospital can receive treatment at home.
